1762年9月11日、スコットランド・ラナークシア（Lanarkshire）生まれの劇作家、詩人。 最初の詩集 Poems: Wherein It is Attempted to Describe Certain Views of Nature and of Rustic Mannersは 1790に出版されたが、98年に出版された最初の劇作集Plays on the Passionsの成功から、スコット（Sir Walter Scott）との親交が始まった。 アーガイル（Argyle）卿とクランの族長マックリーン(Maclean)の確執を扱って 最も成功した戯曲と言われるThe Family Legend (1810) の ‘prologue’はスコット自身が書いている。 彼女のバラッド詩は、多くが1821年出版のMetrical Legendsに収められている。  (M.
