1685年、イングランド北部カンバーランド (Cumberland) 州ブライドカーク (Bridekirk)に生まれ、 オックスフォード大学クィーンズ・カレッジに学ぶ。1715年に『イリヤード』(Iliad )の第1巻を翻訳。 長年にわたるジョゼフ・アディソン (Joseph Addison)の友人であり、彼の死に際して、有名な哀歌 "To the Earl of Warwick, on the death of Mr. Addison" (1721)を書いた。

伝承バラッド"Fair Margaret and Sweet William" (Child 74) を元歌とするティッケルの感傷的な バラッド詩"Lucy and Colin"はヴィンセント・ボーン (Vincent Bourne, 1695-1747; ウエストミンスター校の校長でラテン詩作者)によってラテン語に訳された。この詩を Reliques of Ancient English Poetry に収録したパースィ (Thomas Percy)は、 "one of the most beautiful ballads in our own or any other language" (Reliques 第3巻)と称え、 ジョージ・セインツベリー (George Saintsbury, 1845-1933; 文芸評論家・歴史家)は "Any single copy of verses [does not] deserve so much credit for setting the eighteenth century back on the road of true romantic poetry by an easy path, suited to its own tastes and powers."
