John Stuart Blackie (1809-95)
Scottish classical scholar, born in Glasgow. He made great effort to reform the university curriculum at Aberdeen; then, when he became a professor of Greek at Edinburgh, he endeavoured to institute a Celtic chair in 1882. His translation of Faust (1834) won the praise of Carlyle. His other publications are: Lays and Legends of Ancient Greece (1857), Lays of the Highlands and Islands (1872), Life of Robert Burns (1887), Scottish Song (1889), etc. (Y. Y.)
